Holland Park House Renovation

This family home in Holland Park, London, has undergone a full renovation. Heckmann Design provided full architectural and interior design services, including the design of bespoke joinery and selected furniture pieces. We acted as lead consultants, assisting our Clients to assemble a design team, to include Quantity Surveyors, Structural Engineers and Services Engineers. As part of our responsibilities was a role of Contract Administrators, managing the Building Contract and overseeing the project during the construction stage.

Located conservation area in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, any proposed changes to the exterior of the building required approval from the local planning authority. Heckmann Design successfully secured planning permission on behalf of the client. The approved interventions were instrumental in improving how the internal spaces are used and experienced by the busy young family with children.

Upon entering the property, the newly designed staircase creates a strong vertical connection throughout the house. Replacing the original staircase allowed the internal layout to be reconfigured, improving circulation and enabling the creation of an ensuite bathroom for each bedroom.

The ground floor is designed for adult gatherings and the enjoyment of the owners’ art collection. Here we sourced a number of unusual and refined furniture pieces, designed a built-in coffee and drinks bar, and created a quiet reading corner overlooking the garden, offering moments of pause as the view changes through the seasons.

One of the Client's request, was to create a study- space for working and meetings. For this room we designed the Nobilis bookcase, which has since become part of our bespoke furniture collection. The desk is based on an original design by Poul Henningsen, made to order for this project with bespoke finishes and refined detailing to our specification, including discreet cable management to maintain the clarity and elegance of the piece.

On the lower ground floor, where much of the family’s daily life unfolds, the kitchen was designed to open fully to the living areas while also allowing the option to be closed off during more private or formal occasions. From the kitchen, views extend directly into the garden, allowing light and landscape to flow through the space. All built-in joinery and the kitchen were designed by Heckmann Design.

Newly formed utility room and the gym are located at the basement level.

The principal bedroom connects directly to a dressing room fitted with bespoke wardrobe units designed to balance elegance with functionality. Throughout the bedrooms, bespoke joinery elements maximise storage while maintaining a calm and coherent interior language.

The interiors are contemporary and yet timeless, carefully considered, with a consistent architectural language flowing from space to space, while maintaining a strong emphasis on practicality and everyday usability in response to the client’s brief.
